Sexuality & The Moon

The different moon phases have an effect on many different aspects of life. It effects the oceans tides, the growth of plants, and even when certain creatures lay their eggs. With that being said it shouldn't come as a surprise that the moon phases also have an effect on humans. Yes, it's true! In ancient times, those who were menstruating were especially affected by the moon. In fact, in origin, menses, month, and moon are all related etymologically. Those of us who have a menstrual cycle are deeply connected to the moon, and we cycle with the moon (hence the moon cycle & the menstrual cycle both generally being 28 days long.)

This article isn't specific to the menstrual cycle, (although it's one of my favorite topics, and I'll write more about it soon!), but it's deeply connected to the way the moon effects our sexuality. Traditionally people with vaginas bled during the new moon, shedding what no longer served, and creating new beginnings. A time often used as an inwardness, reflection, and intention setting. However, two weeks later is generally the time that ovulation occurs, which traditionally is in sync with the full moon. When it comes to our sexual drive, two things are at play in this situation. The first is the bodies cycle...during ovulation, both estrogen and testosterone increase in the body, which results in increased libido and energy. Second, the moon, ruling the water and the tides, shifts movement within our bodies as well (as we're 60-65% water). The full moon is receptive and magnetic, it elevates energy and sexuality. Many ancient tribes chose the full moon for fertility rites and believed it was the perfect time to conceive (ie: ovulation!) Not only that, but animals also follow the moon phases instinctively and numerous species use this time as a mating time or a time to lay their eggs.

Both ovulation and the full moon have similar effects on the body. Increased passion, libido, energetic phases, emotions, and sensuality. So the full moon is the perfect time to indulge in that sexual energy and connect with your partner or yourself! (If you don't want to get pregnant and you're connecting with someone who you can conceive with, I recommend making sure you're using some form of protection!)

Use the full moon to harness your sexuality. Have a bubble bath, enjoy some aphrodisiacs, plan a special night or day with your lover, or for just yourself. Use your favorite toys, soak in nature, create a ritual for self love, get grounded, get creative, and let yourself flow!

Do you have a favorite way to get connected to your body, or to the full moon? Do you do any special rituals? I would love to hear about them!
